About
News of the Week
Each week a student volunteers to present "The News of the Week." "The News of the Week" is a summarization of all the news that has been going on in the world since last week's meeting that is done in the first couple of minutes of the meeting.
Topic Discussions
Topics for discussions at IAA's weekly meetings include mostly current international issues. Topics are chosen the week prior by the students through a direct democratic system: students propose topics and vote on them immediately afterwards. The week gap between selection of the topic and the meeting allows for students to prepare for the topic of the week by reading newspaper articles and other relevant materials as they see fit; however, the officers also traditionally provide articles to help guide your readings. Students can also volunteer to lead discussion. A previous administration has attempted to alternate a week of discussion with an associated simulation on the same topic in order to provide students with better preparedness for Model UN Conferences.
Model United Nations
International Affairs Association sends students to, but does not host its own Model United Nations Conferences. Model UN conferences are simulations of how diplomacy is conducted in the committee setting. Whether they are committees that are part of the United Nations itself, other international organizations, or ones that center around a historical or thematic issue (eg. the Unification of the German Empire), each committee engages students in the policy making process. Students take on the role of an actor, adopt that actor's perspectives, and then try to reach a solution to a predetermined problem with the help of other students in the committee.
"The Ambassador"
"The Ambassador" is a student run zine, or pulp magazine, which is published at the end of every school year by the International Affairs Association. Students within IAA can submit articles about a variety of topics, including:
- Issues that they are interested in within the field of international affairs
- Issues that sparked an interest as a result of either weekly discussion or "The News of the Week"
