Model UN
General Guidelines
IAA&MUN sends students to four Model UN Conferences per year, which is divided into two per semester and includes one international conference in the spring. Students are selected through a competitive application process that occurs during the Fall in two cycles. Specific dates for conferences will be listed with each application, but here are some general facts about Model United Nations Conferences and how they work with Gettysburg students.
check with their professors (when possible) prior to submitting an application for a conference.
--- to conduct extensive research on any combination of the following (dep. on their committee): Actor, Committee, Issue.
--- to conduct themselves in an appropriate and professional manner while attending conferences as representatives of
both the college and the club
- Students are allowed to choose their preferred actor from a specific list of designated roles the delegation receives from the conference (i.e. The conference chooses which actors we have, and we divide them amongst ourselves).
- Conferences are usually multi-day events [They have been known to wrap around weekends (e.g. Thursday onward), and can occur at least part-way during our school's holiday breaks in prior cases]
- Committees are not all about the United Nations. Some committees cover other international organizations or focus on thematic or historical issues depending on the conference offerings (e.g. African Union, Unification of the German Empire)
- There are two types of committees: General Assembly and Crisis
- General Assembly - Conference style assembly (20+ people) that relies on chair moderation, rules of procedure, and large bloc formation for the passing of resolutions (1-2 issues/resolutions are passed in a session)
- Crisis Committee - Small meeting of less than 10 people that places less emphasis on rules of procedure, allows for greater interaction with the chair, and opportunities for creative problem solving (Resolutions are passed more frequently and issues adapt to external shocks)
- Students do not have to pay the cost of attending a conference; however, this is wholly dependent on Student Senate funding
- Applications are open to the entire school, and will be advertised periodically in the student digests for two weeks prior to the application deadline
- It is the student's responsibility

Training for Model UN
Regardless of one's prior experience with Model UN, International Affairs and Model UN Association is committed to fostering the next generation of Model UN participants at Gettysburg College. Prior to sending students to conferences IAA&MUN runs a short simulation to familiarize students with parliamentary procedure and how to best conduct themselves in their committees. In addition, once students have selected their committee and actor, club officers will conduct face to face meetings, or "MUN on One Meetings," in order to go over both the research they have conducted and any final questions they have prior to departure.
